The Magna Charta Universitatum’s conference “Universities and Re-Construction of Cities: the Role of Research and Education” (23-25.10.2023, Łódź)

On 23-25 October 2023, The Magna Charta Universitatum held the conference “Universities and Re-Construction of Cities: the Role of Research and Education”. The conference featured renowned international speakers who shared their views and led discussions. More than 130 participants representing educational institutions from 37 countries had the opportunity to interact closely during various small group discussions.

The event was held with the participation of Mychailo Wynnyckyj, Deputy Minister of Education and Science, responsible for higher education, Member of Erasmus+ HERE Team and other representatives from Ukraine: Petro KULIKOV (president of the Union of Rectors of Higher Education Institutions of Ukraine”), POLINA HOMBALEVSKA (expert of National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance of Ukraine, president of Ukrainian Association of Students), TETYANA ORIEKHOVA (Dean of the Faculty of Economics at Vasyl’ Stus Donetsk National University), ANNA OSMOLOVSKA (Deputy Director on a new academic project – Educational Academy “UAdvise”, co-author of the world’s first Ukrainian-language version of Magna Charta Universitatum 2020), DIANA STEFANOVA SLOBODIAN (Pavo Tychyna Uman State Pedagogical University), MAKSYM SVYSENKO (Co-founder and chairman of the Congress of the Ukrainian Students League, Coordinator of the national programme Statebuilder by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine) etc.

The Magna Charta Universitatum, first signed by 388 rectors in 1988 in the presence of many political leaders and representatives of society and revised in 2020 to reflect changes in the world faced by universities, continues to underpin the mission and operations of universities everywhere. Over 950 university leaders from all over the world have now signed it. Each year the Magna Charta Observatory organises an international conference to address current challenges in upholding the fundamental values and serving society responsibly and celebrates in a ceremony as more rectors sign the Magna Charta Universitatum. This year’s conference and ceremony took place on 23, 24 and 25 October 2023 in Lodz, Poland.

AGENDA.

Purpose of the conference is to enable universities to respond more effectively to the challenges which they face and anticipate and strengthen their universities’ capability to uphold fundamental values for the benefit of society in the face of global challenges and transformations.

On 25 October, the Magna Charta Observatory and the University of Lodz hosted the Ceremony for the Signing of the Magna Charta by universities committed to the principles of Universitatum. 34 universities from 12 countries became new signatories to the Magna Charta Universitatum.
